Tox-ing in the summer: why neurotoxins are your skin’s best friend

Summer skincare tips

Squinting is part of summer life, especially with the sun’s bright rays beaming on us. And with our summers only getting hotter in the past few years- with heat waves consistently increasing in intensity every year; we can’t prevent squinting our eyes no matter how big our sunglasses are. Repetitive motions cause dynamic wrinkles, and that’s a problem for many of us! Although we love to embrace aging with grace, we do what we can to prevent premature fine lines and wrinkles from forming. Enter: Neurotoxins in the summer.

Neurotoxins have shown effective results in helping with long-term wrinkle management and slowing down the overall aging process.

Neurotoxins (“Tox”), such as Xeomin and Botox, are commonly used to prevent wrinkles by temporarily relaxing your facial muscles. They are injectables that target the muscles between your brows (11 lines) and around the eyes, which prevent the repetitive movement (such as squinting or frowning) that causes new lines. Tox is also popularly used on the forehead, masseters, for “lip flips”, and even to reduce excessive sweating. It has shown effective results in helping with long-term wrinkle management and slowing down the overall aging process. It’s no surprise that neurotoxins are a staple in beauty treatments and should be your best friend especially during the summer time. That and sunscreen, of course (But we’ll save that for another article).

Those who have always been afraid of using neurotoxins, either from the negative press of overdoing it or from the very term “toxin”, have every right to be cautious before having something injected into their skin. But it is important to note that there are 5 FDA-approved neurotoxin brands in the US, namely Botox, Xeomin, Dysport, Jeuveau, and Daxxify. Each has been thoroughly tested and researched on, with extensive data publicly available. Using these brands is overwhelmingly safe in a professional setting. More specifically, Xeomin is regarded as a “purified” form of tox. This is because its formulation contains no additives or proteins- just purely botulinum type A. This reduces the chances of allergies or of forming antibodies against Xeomin that could diminish its effectiveness.

Another reason you should be getting tox as summer rolls in is that it lasts up to 3 to 6 months, on average. This range varies based on how many units are used, metabolism, and physical activity (which can cause the neurotoxin to wear off faster due to increased blood flow). This means that you don’t have to worry about forming new squint lines or deepening existing lines and wrinkles, as your tox will be effective all summer long- and well into the Ber months if you’re lucky.

A quick 15-minute tox session is all you have and that’s enough to keep your skin smooth all summer long.

Summer is also vacation season, which means beaches, beaches, and more beaches. With a “busy” schedule filling your weekends, it can become difficult to keep up with your regular appointments at the clinic to keep the skin fresh and clear. After all, the kids are out of school and time is golden. A quick 15-minute tox session is all you have and that’s enough to keep your skin smooth all summer long. Not to mention that aside from very minimal bruising, there is almost no down time when it comes to tox-ing!

Before anything else, do your research on where you get your tox injections. As a matter of fact, this goes for all your treatments. Make sure you are confident with the expertise of your provider, and if possible, schedule a consultation before committing so you are informed of all side effects and what to expect. There are many providers out there that offer free consultations; try to take advantage of that if you are still shopping around for the right place for you.
